The state-owned gaming company Singapore Pools combats illegal gambling activity in Singapore by providing a legal, safe and trusted betting environment for its customers. Their products include providing sports, lottery, and horse racing betting through a retail network of branches and live betting venues Customers who meet their social safeguards requirements can also bet online using Singapore Pools account. They started a digitalization journey to create a robust technology infrastructure to better serve the community and strengthen responsible gaming measures to protect customers. Their Enterprise Architecture practice supports them in accelerating business transformation initiatives and capabilities.

Why the business requires a Digital Enterprise Architecture practice?

The team in the Enterprise Architecture practice needed to support the business’ strategy to create a digitally connected enterprise. The business wanted to be more agile in managing digital disruptions and create better contingency plans based on clear insights into the structure and operations of the organization.

The team therefore needed to capture and visualize the various risk and security aspects of the organization. For example, the Covid pandemic forced most staff to work from home and adjustments had to be made to accommodate this without disrupting business operations. The team needed to create up-to-date models of architecture, processes, systems, and data to assess how far a problem could spread if it occurred, and at which point the organization should act quickly to mitigate the impact of a threat.

Additionally, they needed to improve their product and service design to realize the business’s vision of a world-class, socially responsible gaming company trusted by customers and valued by the community. New digital capabilities had to be developed to harness the power of information within the organization, achieved through protecting valuable intellectual property or privacy-sensitive data that are crucial for business continuity and essential from a regulatory compliance perspective. This would also help focus the business on investment priorities and avoid spending too much on protecting unimportant assets or blanket measures.

How Singapore Pools created a Digital Enterprise Architecture

The team created a framework and processes based on The Open Group’s® TOGAF® Enterprise Architecture Framework and TOGAF® Architecture Development Methodology. They based internal resources on IASA ITABoK Enterprise Architecture skillsets to ensure that they can drive digital adoption.

They also subsequently chose Bizzdesign’s platform as their digital Enterprise Architecture tool. They chose the platform because of its ease of use and ability to address their current business and technology challenges. They’re using ArchiMate® 3.1 to create a digital metamodel in the platform.

Bizzdesign’s platform allows the team to have a central repository and single source of information that stores all their enterprise architecture processes lifecycles and artifacts. The platform is accessible by all team members ensuring effective collaboration.

The team can also see holistic interrelated Architecture Views and easily trace each component across different domains allowing total visibility and traceability within Singapore Pools.

Furthermore, Bizzdesign’s platform allows them to gain quality insights through a series of dashboards. The dashboards offer extensive analysis capabilities and highly interactive visualizations that support their various stakeholders in decision-making, as well as provide insightful information in a single view.

We view Enterprise Architecture as a culture that needs to be sustained from which we draw major benefits. We can now reposition and realign IT to the current business needs and environment and promote a cross-team collaboration culture within the organization.

The value of having a Digital Enterprise Architecture

An agile organization with a view on the entire landscape
Singapore Pools’ digital Enterprise Architecture culture has made them more agile with a commanding view of their entire landscape. Their practice is fully aligned with the business’s strategic goals to drive enterprise capabilities. Enterprise Architecture is managed in a structured manner allowing more developmental activities such as a gap and impact analysis across various domains. They can easily analyze and see the strategic interrelationships and dependencies whenever changes are made in the architecture.

Collaboration and communications between teams
ArchiMate as their common modeling language is comprehensible by both Business and IT, resulting in coherent communication and alignment between teams. This holistic approach has guided business-technology transformation and strategy realization in achieving the business’s vision and objectives.

Increased risk profile of overall architecture, strategy, and assets
With their Digital Enterprise Architecture, the organization understands hazards, risks, and mitigation measures concerning their overall architecture, business strategy, and assets. They can now perform a true strategy- and value-based risk and compliance assessment to measure and visualize the potential impact of risks.

Empowered to calculate business value and prioritize IT measures
They use these insights to prioritize investments and mitigate gaps. In addition, with these architectural designs, the organization calculates the business value and the impact of security projects and uses this to prioritize IT measures.
