Bizzdesign Publishes 5th Edition of Exclusive “State of Enterprise Architecture” Report New Research Highlights How Mature EA Practices Drive Business Transformation
Utrecht, Netherlands - Bizzdesign, a leading enterprise architecture company, published its fifth annual “State of Enterprise Architecture” report today. The study reveals that organizations with more mature enterprise architecture practices invest more strategically and better understand the changes their businesses need to make.
The survey shows:
- Leaders invest more strategically: 56% of enterprise architecture leaders fully agree that projects are prioritized that contribute the most to strategic goals. Only 34% of all respondents and 14% of laggards said the same.
- Leaders use enterprise architecture to select investments: 66% of leaders aim to support better investment decisions with their enterprise architecture program, but only 28% of laggards do.
- Leaders understand their capabilities better: Capabilities are things that the organization does or can do, regardless of how they’re done. Delivering business transformation requires an understanding of the organization’s capabilities today and how they must change for tomorrow. 44% of leaders said they had a very good understanding of that, compared to only 23% of all respondents and 8% of laggards.
- Leaders have more granular visibility: They are 1.8x more likely than the average to report good visibility into how processes contribute to business goals. Leaders are 1.6x more likely to have strong visibility into people, technology, and transformation projects. They score their visibility into information 1.7x higher.
This year, Bizzdesign also explored sustainability and business change. Key survey findings:
- Leaders consider sustainability: 49% of leaders consider sustainability when making business transformation decisions, compared to 27% of all respondents and 14% of laggards.
- Leaders understand their IT sustainability: 48% of leaders understand the sustainability and environmental impact of their IT assets. Only 25% of all respondents and 13% of laggards do so.
- Leaders have integrated sustainability metrics: More than a third of leaders (34%) have integrated sustainability metrics with their business transformation planning tools. Only 13% of all respondents and 5% of laggards have done so.
In the study, respondents were asked to describe the biggest barrier to executing strategy in their own words. 20% said money or budgets; 15% cited culture (including an unwillingness to change), while 14% pointed management (including delayed decision-making).
“For organizations to adapt, they need a good understanding of their capabilities and how they must change,” said Marc Lankhorst, Chief Technology Evangelist at Bizzdesign. “Our survey shows that organizations with more mature enterprise architecture practices have a better understanding of that gap, and the role that their people, processes, and transformation projects play in meeting business goals. With a stronger insight into the environmental impact of IT, they are also better placed to consider sustainability in business transformation decisions.”
